What is a real rum?
Real rum is a spirit made from sugar cane or molasses, a by-product of sugar production. The production process begins with the extraction of sugar cane juice or molasses, which is then fermented with yeast to convert the sugar into alcohol. The liquid is then distilled to increase the alcohol content.
The taste of the rum can vary depending on the distillation process. Distillation in stills produces a stronger, fuller rum, while distillation in columns produces a lighter rum. Many rums are also matured in oak barrels, which makes them softer and more complex in taste. Maturation can take years and contributes significantly to the development of the aromas.
There are different types of rum. White rum is light in color and rather mild in taste, while dark rum acquires a deeper color and more complex aromas through longer maturation. Gold rum has a taste in between and is given a golden color and a balanced aroma through shorter maturation in barrels. Spiced rum is infused with spices such as vanilla or cinnamon and therefore has a particularly aromatic taste.
Real rum can be found in many cocktails such as mojito or daiquiri, but can also be enjoyed on its own to experience the variety and depth of flavors. Depending on the variety and origin, rum offers a wide range of flavors from fruity and sweet to spicy and strong.
